Online safety: Innovation Award

EIFL - FOSS news - სამ, 23/01/2024 - 17:00

Prelog City Library and Reading Room, a small library staffed by just two librarians serving the town of Prelog in Croatia, is making a huge impact across the country with its ‘GEL - Guerrilla Education for Librarians’ programme. GEL is an online safety training programme targeting librarians, with a strong training-of-trainers component enabling librarians who have undergone the training to pass on their knowledge to the communities they serve.

Digital rights & inclusion of forcefully displaced populations: Innovation Award

EIFL - FOSS news - სამ, 23/01/2024 - 14:36

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of forcefully displaced and traumatized families have taken refuge in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine. Housed in temporary shelters, these families are struggling to rebuild their lives and integrate into a new and unfamiliar environment.

‘The Fifth Element’, a project of Lviv Regional Children's Library, helps children of displaced families through a combination of interactive and fun training in digital skills, information literacy and critical thinking, and psychological support.

Climate Action: Innovation Award

EIFL - FOSS news - სამ, 23/01/2024 - 13:45

The city of Ust-Kamenogorsk in East Kazakhstan is badly polluted. The main atmospheric polluters are the giant metallurgy and chemical companies which pump toxic gases into the air. In addition, the city struggles with solid waste disposal, resulting in unauthorized dumping by citizens, the accumulation of garbage in backyards and litter in the streets, parks and children’s sports grounds.

Online safety: Innovation Award

EIFL - FOSS news - სამ, 23/01/2024 - 13:18

More and more children and youth across Kenya are going online as internet infrastructure improves and connectivity and digital devices become more affordable. This is good news for digital inclusion, but the lack of digital literacy and online safety skills leaves young internet users vulnerable to threats like grooming, cyberbullying and fraud, says Eliphas Nyamogo, founder and director of Fahari Community Initiative, which runs the Fahari Community Library in Migori, Kenya.
