Congratulations to six African scholarship winners

Congratulations to six young African public library innovators who have won scholarships to take part in the 3rd conference of the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) and 5th African Library Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. The Summit theme this year is ‘African Libraries Creating the Africa We Want and Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals’.

The Summit will be attended by public library leadership and librarians, government officials and information stakeholders from across the African continent.

Strengthening public library training in Namibia

EIFL and Namibia Library and Archives Service (NLAS) have entered into a partnership to strengthen continuous professional development of public librarians by building training skills of a group of librarians, who will become trainers within the NLS network of public libraries.

The partnership will build capacity of public librarians to use digital technology effectively and confidently in services that are relevant to their communities, and to provide technology training in their communities.

Congratulations to six young African public librarians, who will travel to Denmark as part of IYALI (the Initiative for Young African Library Innovators).

IYALI is an initiative of the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP). The initiative aims to expose emerging public library innovators in Africa to professional learning experiences and ideas from other countries. IYALI 2019 is a partnership between EIFL and Aarhus Public Libraries in Denmark.

Cambodia national workshop on disability

EIFL is to take part in the first national workshop in Cambodia to design a National Disability Strategic Plan (NDSP) 2019-2023. The new plan aims to ensure inclusiveness and equality for people living with disabilities in Cambodia.

The two-day workshop will bring together the Royal Government of Cambodia, the UN Development Programme (UNDP), development partners, civil society, persons with disabilities and the private sector.

EIFL eLibrary Myanmar project

Open science on the move in Serbia

EIFL has been supporting open access in Serbia since 2000. EIFL-supported awareness raising, advocacy and policy development workshops have resulted in the launch of two OA journals portals (doiSerbia and SCIndeks), and improved OA publishing policies and practices.

Learning circles a hit in African public libraries

In 2018, EIFL and partners Peer to Peer University and Kenya National Library Service completed a three-year project to test and encourage growth of learning circles - in-person study groups for online learners - in public libraries in Africa. The results far exceeded the project’s goals - in just one year (2018) over a thousand people completed online courses in a wide range of subjects in libraries in Kenya and Uganda, and in Zambia dozens of learners are working through courses.

Cambodia’s disability strategy targets Marrakesh

On 11-12 December 2018, EIFL participated in the first national workshop in Cambodia to design a National Disability Strategic Plan (NDSP) 2019-2023. The new plan, that aims to ensure inclusiveness and equality for people living with disabilities, extends for another four years the existing plan (2014-2018) that has benefited around 10,000 people.

Namibia public librarians’ training

Seventeen trainers from public libraries in Namibia will attend a four-day EIFL workshop on design thinking for public libraries and project management.

The 17 trainees were selected by Namibia Library and Archives Service (NLAS) to become trainers within the NLAS network of 65 public libraries. They will pass on their learning and skills to other librarians in the NLAS network.

WIPO Copyright Committee (39th Session)

The 39th session of the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) takes place in Geneva from 21 - 25 October 2019.

EIFL will participate in the session when delegates from WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) member states discuss limitations and exceptions for libraries and archives, education and research, and a proposed treaty for the protection of broadcast organizations, among other topics.

Renewal agreement for Cambridge Journals Online

EIFL has signed a renewal agreement with Cambridge University Press for Cambridge Journals Online.

Cambridge Journals Online offers access to a multidisciplinary collection of over 398 leading journals, including over 200 published on behalf of learned and professional societies. In 2019, the collection includes 167 journals in Science & Technology, 262 in Humanities & Social Sciences, and 73 in Medicine.

Almost all of the children (98%) who attended EIFL-supported hands-on computer classes in under-resourced schools in three regions of Ghana have passed ICT in the Basic Education Certificate Exam (B.E.C.E) in 2018.

EIFL renews agreements with Duke University Press

The e-Duke Journals Scholarly Collections provides online access to 50 Duke University Press journals in the humanities and social sciences.

The Euclid Prime Collection is a collection of journals in theoretical and applied mathematics and statistics hosted by Project Euclid. The 2019 collection includes current content from 32 titles, as well as archival content from another 15 journals. There are also 26 open access journals available from Project Euclid.
