Continuous professional development of public librarians

To stay relevant, public libraries must develop strong relationships with their communities, and meet their information, education or leisure needs. Also, public libraries should know local socio-economic development priorities to make sure that they can contribute to these. For librarians, this means constantly learning new skills or upgrading old ones so that that they are confidently able to offer new and innovative services to meet changing needs and priorities.

Technology boost for 13 public libraries in Uganda

EIFL welcomes the news that the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is to equip 13 public libraries with computers and the internet by the middle of June 2019. All libraries to receive the technology serve communities that have little or no access to computers and the internet.

Zambia public librarians’ training

Twenty-four public librarians from 12 public libraries in Zambia will attend communications and advocacy training organized by EIFL in partnership with the Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ).

Training will be conducted by the international communications and advocacy trainer, Kaspars Ruklis.

Capacity building of public librarians in Zambia

In 2018, EIFL entered into a partnership with the Library and Information Association of Zambia (LIAZ) for a national initiative that will build digital technology and professional skills of public library staff to enable them to initiate new public library services that use technology to meet community needs.

The initiative targets 12 public and community libraries in Zambia that are already equipped with computers and the internet. Two librarians from each of the 12 public libraries (a total of 24) will take part in the training.

Three OA repositories launched in Myanmar

Three more universities in Myanmar - Yadanabon University, Yangon University of Economics and Yezin Agricultural University - have launched institutional open access (OA) repositories, which will make their research more visible and freely available to scholars worldwide.

Leading Higher Education Transformation in Myanmar

The British Council and University College London will host the First National Conference ‘Leading Higher Education Transformation in Myanmar’. Delegates from over 100 Myanmar universities will take part in the conference, which brings together over 200 leaders in higher education in Myanmar.

The conference will cover higher education reform from the national and international perspectives, and the leadership and management skills needed for higher education reform.

New OA policies in Eastern African universities

Twelve universities in Eastern Africa have adopted open access (OA) policies requiring researchers to deposit their research in institutional OA repositories, subject to copyright permissions.

The new policies will make the universities’ research output freely available online, ensuring that important research that is being conducted at universities in Eastern Africa reaches the global scientific community.

Action at WIPO!

Teresa Hackett, EIFL Copyright and Libraries Programme Manager participated in the 36th meeting of the WIPO Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR), the global body that sets international copyright law and policy, that took place from 28 May to 1 June 2018. During the busy week, EIFL engaged in discussions on libraries and archives, made interventions in plenary sessions, met with member state delegates and collaborated with NGO partners.

Helping libraries to get meaningful numbers

EIFL has been working with public libraries in Africa since 2010, supporting introduction of new services that use computers and the internet. In the course of our work, we observed that public librarians were struggling to collect statistics about their new services. Statistics gathering was limited to basic library operations, like lending books and library membership numbers.
