My name is Alix Halloran and I am GlobalGiving's Field Traveller in West Africa. I spent five months traveling around the region meeting with GlobalGiving's incredible nonprofit partners. I was so excited for the opportunity to spend the day with the regional librarians in Ghana who implement the EIFL Hands-on computer classes!

Open science in Estonia

EIFL calls on Malawi: embrace spirit of Marrakesh

Leading library organizations, EIFL, AfLIA (African Library and Information Associations and Institutions) and IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions), call on Malawi to embrace the spirit of the Marrakesh Treaty by dropping a legal requirement to check if a work is commercially available before an accessible format copy can be made.

Open access in Ghana

In Ghana, and in many other developing countries, research has limited social and economic impact because it is not widely available and accessible. Restricted access to research is also an obstacle to the production of new knowledge. Open access (OA) provides a solution by making scientific research visible and freely available online.

Kenya Learning Circles workshop

Three Ethiopian journals go OA

EIFL welcomes the news that all three journals of the Institute of Education Research of Addis Ababa University are now available in open access (OA).

The announcement was made on 27 June 2017 - the occasion of the 50th birthday of one of the three journals, the Ethiopian Journal of Education (EJE) - by Professor Darge Wole, the journal’s editor-in-chief.

The other two Institute of Education and Research journals that have entered the OA arena are the Ethiopian Journal of Higher Education (EJHE) and the IER Flambeau.

Course packs for education ruled legal in India

On 9 May 2017, a five year court battle between publishers and universities finally came to an end when the Supreme Court of India dismissed an appeal by the Indian Reprographic Rights Organization (IRRO) challenging an earlier judgment of Delhi High Court that ruled course packs in India legal for educational purposes.

Seminar: Marrakesh Treaty in Africa

EIFL, together with our partner, the Lesotho Library Consortium (LELICO), is organizing a seminar in Lesotho on the Marrakesh Treaty for persons with print disabilities.

Policy-makers and officials, librarians, and representatives of people living with disability from Lesotho, Botswana, Kenya, Senegal and South Africa will attend the seminar, which is organized in cooperation with the Lesotho Registrar General's Office.

eLibrary Myanmar Project training

CSIR Ghana adopts open access policy

EIFL welcomes the adoption of an open access (OA) policy by Ghana’s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the body mandated by the government to carry out scientific and technological research for national development.

The adoption of the policy emerged out of an EIFL-funded project implemented by the CSIR’s Institute for Scientific and Technological Information (CSIR-INSTI). The project, which aims to foster development and implementation of an OA policy, started in 2015.

Kenya library helps children conquer fear of maths

Kenya National Library Service / Nakuru Public Library has shared results of its interactive online learning programme which helped primary school children overcome their fear of maths and improve their grades in maths tests.

The project was launched with a small grant from the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) in 2016.

During visits to primary schools, librarians from Nakuru Public Library in the busy town of Nakuru in mid-western Kenya were alarmed to find that most of the children they spoke to hated mathematics. The children believed maths was very difficult, many were failing, and some dreaded the subject so much that they wanted to drop out of school.


The librarians put their heads together: how could they help change children’s attitudes and boost their performance in mathematics?

Open science training for PhD students

EIFL is providing open science training during the Kaunas University of Technology International PhD Summer School for PhD students.

On 24 August, EIFL Open Access Programme Manager Iryna Kuchma and DCC (Digital Curation Centre) Associate Director Sarah Jones will facilitate an EIFL training session, which is titled ‘Open science and research data management: tips and tools to help you plan to get the most from your data’.
