Supporting Education: Innovation Award

Every month, 20 children attend Pelči Library’s ‘Little school of local history’, where they research the library’s digital history collection and make animated films about the past.

The library's popular local history classes are stimulating children’s curiosity about the past, improving their creative and analytic skills and building their confidence.

Copyright reform in Poland

On 20 November 2015, Poland’s new copyright law entered into force bringing library services in Poland into the twenty-first century.

The centrepiece for libraries of the new legislation are provisions that enable digitization for socially beneficial purposes, such as education and preservation of cultural heritage. The new law also implements two important European Directives.

EIFL OA workshops in Myanmar

EIFL will host workshops for open access (OA) working groups and librarians from three Myanmar universities that are adopting OA policies and setting up OA institutional repositories.

The three universities - Yangon University of Economics, Yadanabon University and Yezin Agricultural University - will use the opportunity to finalize OA policy documents, ensure the look and feel of the new repositories, and the repository structures, are right, and to upload the first research.

Open Access in Slovenia

Until 2011 information on open access (OA) in Slovenian was scattered. Individual OA enthusiasts and supporters were promoting OA and sharing information with academic and research communities, but their efforts were not coordinated.

Marrakesh Treaty in south-east Europe

Teresa Hackett, EIFL Copyright and Libraries Programme Manager, will present an overview of three key guides to the Marrakesh Treaty for persons with print disabilities during a training course organized by the European Blind Union (EBU) on ‘The Importance of the Marrakesh Treaty: Its Ratification and Implementation’.

The training course is aimed at EBU members, libraries and national authorities in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia.

Meetings on copyright law in Armenia

Kenya library's service for visually impaired children

During their regular outreach visits to schools, Nairobi Area librarians noticed that in order to study, five or more blind and visually impaired children were crowding around one braille textbook.  Some textbooks were only available in print, and the children would have to wait for teachers or sighted students to read the books aloud to them. For leisure reading, the situation was the same - schools did not have enough braille or audio books to serve blind and visually impaired children’s needs.

Kenya library reaches out to visually impaired

Kenya National Library Service / Nairobi Area Library has shared results of a project that supports education of blind and visually impaired schoolchildren by increasing their access to textbooks in braille and audio formats.

The project was supported by a small grant from the EIFL Public Library Innovation Programme (EIFL-PLIP) in 2016/17, and matching funds from Kenya National Library Service.

Open Access Week 2017

EIFL and partners from the OpenAIRE and FOSTER (Facilitating Open Science Training for European Research) projects are celebrating Open Access Week 2017 (23-29 October) with a series of webinars on open science, open access and open data.

Open Access Week is an annual, global event established by SPARC in 2008 to raise awareness about open access (OA) and to call for OA to be the new norm in scholarship and research.

Open access publishing in Serbia

EIFL has been supporting open access (OA) and OA publishing in Serbia since 2000. As a result, Serbia was one of the first countries in eastern Europe to adopt an OA publishing model.

EIFL’s main partners in promoting OA publishing have been the Serbian Library Consortium for Coordinated Acquisition (KoBSON) and CEON/CEES (Centre for evaluation in Education and Science), which hosts a platform for OA journals.

EIFL Marrakesh Guide launches in Spanish

Copyright reform in Armenia

EIFL has been engaged in copyright work in Armenia since 2012, supporting a national  advocacy campaign to review the current copyright law (2006) and to make library-friendly recommendations for the new law.  

The new draft copyright law was published in 2017. EIFL and the Electronic Library Consortium of Armenia (ELCA) are evaluating the new draft law, and are making interventions as needed.

Open access in Armenia

Support for and awareness about open access (OA) has been growing steadily in Armenia over the past decade. 

In 2007, Armenia's National Academy of Sciences, supported by the Open Society Assistance Foundation, launched two high-quality OA journals: the Armenian Journal of Mathematics and the Armenian Journal of Physics.

Botswana Open Data and Open Science Forum

Capacity building of pubic librarians in Uganda

In 2014/15 EIFL worked with local partners to implement a major capacity building initiative involving 24 librarians from 22 public and community libraries that currently provide public access to computers and the internet.

The training built librarians’ capacity to use information and communications technology (ICT) effectively, and to create new public library services that use ICT to benefit communities. It also built librarians’ training capacity so that they can teach community members to use ICT.

Piloting blended learning in Kenyan libraries

There is a huge volume of free, high-quality courses available online, offering access to valuable knowledge and skills that can help people further their education and careers. However, lack of peer-support, face-to-face tutoring and technical skills are often a barrier to successful online learning, especially for newcomers.

To help online learners to complete their courses, the non-profit organization Peer to Peer University (P2PU) developed a blended learning (combining digital with in-person methods) model, using Learning Circles.
