Thoth open metadata management and dissemination platform for open access books
Join this EIFL webinar with Toby Steiner, COO at Thoth Open Metadata, and learn more about innovative and community-led metadata management and distribution solutions for integrating open access (OA) books into the wider supply chain. The webinar aims to benefit small- to medium- sized open access publishers who are struggling to produce their metadata to meet the specifications required by different distribution platforms.

UKSG November Conference 2024
EIFL staff and coordinators of EIFL partner library consortia will participate in the UKSG November Conference 2024. The theme of the conference is ‘Cybersecurity and Censorship’.
The conference is a major event in the scholarly communications calendar, attracting a large number of people each year from around the world - librarians, publishers, content providers, consultants and intermediaries. UKSG is providing 30 free places for EIFL.

EIFL agreement with Cambridge University Press
EIFL and Cambridge University Press have renewed their agreement for a further year until December 2025. The renewed agreement includes free and discounted access to journals, read & publish and waived and discounted Article Processing Charges (APCs).

Open Journal Systems: Experiences and Recommendations
EIFL will co-facilitate a regional online workshop for editors and publishers of scholarly open access journals in seven countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. The webinar is jointly organized by the Horizon Europe projects DIAMAS and CRAFT-OA. EIFL is a partner in the DIAMAS project.
That’s a wrap! EIFL concludes webinars on copyright and libraries
Resources from four EIFL webinars on copyright issues for libraries, that took place in September and October 2024, are available online. The webinars explored key topics that concern libraries - copyright and AI (artificial intelligence) for science and research; copyright and the commons (open licences); limitations and exceptions for research and development; fair use, fair dealing and fair practice. The topics were suggested by librarians in EIFL partner countries.
E-Library training for LAOS faculty
EIFL staff member, Jevgenija Sevcova, will train teachers and students in the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at the National University of Laos in the use of the E-Library.

General Assembly 2024
The EIFL General Assembly (GA) 2024 took place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 7 - 9 October, bringing together delegates from our network of library consortia in 30 countries, representatives of our partners in the publishing industry, invited speakers and members of the EIFL management board and staff team.
Celebrating Open Access Week 2024
EIFL will be celebrating international Open Access Week 2024 with libraries, researchers and students in our partner countries. Open Access Week 2024 will continue the 2023 call to put ‘Community over Commercialization’ and prioritize approaches to open scholarship that serve the best interests of the public and the academic community.
Unharnessing Open Research in Ireland
Teresa Hackett, EIFL Copyright and Libraries Programme Manager, will attend ‘Unharnessing Open Research in Ireland’, an event organised by the SCOIR project (Secondary rights, Copyright, Open access, Institutional policies, and Rights retention) at Trinity College, Dublin. “Scoir” is the Irish word for “unharness”.
Paper Pledge for the Planet
Open repositories are a tool for climate action. By increasing the number of climate research papers openly available in repositories, EIFL, COAR (the Confederation of Open Access Repositories) and Creative Commons are collectively taking action to help address the climate crisis.
Over 3,500 of the most-cited climate change articles have been published in the last five years as closed access; however, these articles can be made openly available in repositories because the authors retained their rights and/or have the right to deposit their accepted manuscripts.
Research in Biomedicine and Health: Quality, Excellence, and Performance Conference
Milica Ševkušić, EIFL Open Access Programme Project Coordinator, will conduct training on building capacity for research data management for researchers, librarians and students at the annual scientific conference, Research in Biomedicine and Health: Quality, Excellence, and Performance, organized by Nicolae Testemițanu Medical Scientific Library. Ševkušić’s training will take place on 17 October 2024.
